Chapter 20

A few other players ran around the town when Kelath logged back in at 7 o’clock the next morning. He nodded at Yorrick, who stood next to his forge, doing last minute crafting for anyone who needed it. Kelath followed his lead and entered his workshop. He gathered all the ingredients he would need to brew up his potions.

He’d already crafted a mountain of echolocation and healing potions. He’d placed them in crates behind each gate for any of the defenders to use. Even more were scattered around the town square. He wanted to be prepared if they had to fall back inside. He put lots of regeneration potions there as well, so fighters and rogues could replenish their health quickly if they needed to do so. He figured most casters would already know how to conjure water for themselves. Lastly, he’d placed fire and ice bombs in crates over each gate. From the mock sieges he’d taken part in, giving his defenders options that would control enemies who came close was a very good idea.

With plenty of potions available for everyone else, he got to work creating an overabundance of bombs and elixirs for himself. He kept going until his inventory was almost full. Nobody would be carrying loot so he had no need for the space, but he might need his class consumables and not have time to make them in the middle of the fighting. Better to be overprepared on that front than run out at some crucial point during the action.

Over time, more players logged into the game and set out making preparations of their own. The auction house was packed with people looking to buy something before the fighting started. Milneth’s shop had players lined out the door to purchase last minute enchantments for their equipment. Others sprinted back and forth between Elora’s and Yorrick’s workshops, helping them finish making some replacement parts for siege engines, in case they were damaged in the fighting. By 10 o’clock, players were running around everywhere he looked.

Kelath stood in front of the town hall, answering questions for guild members and directing those who looked lost in where they could go to find something useful to do in the preparations. Both Rowena and Zafira showed up, and he asked them to go to the meeting room so he could lay out his strategy for them. When he joined them a minute later, Rowena was leaning back in one of the chairs with her feet on the table. Zafira walked back and forth as if she was anxious to be doing something rather than waiting around.

“What’s the plan?” asked Rowena while he closed the door.

Kelath drank an echolocation potion and scanned the room. When he was satisfied nobody had come in without his permission, he sat down at the table. He asked Zafira to sit with them, as her pacing was making him nervous.

Once they were all seated, he said, “I’ve set up a little trap for Itrix. I’m hoping he’ll be angry enough about the ship that’s being built to attack it.
